FINDING A PLACE

Five careers defined by a single moment — a one-hit masterpiece in a lost season, a can't-miss prospect who never won, a backup who disciplined his way up, two flashes of brilliance, and a stand of conscience.

The five stories

Previews below. The full stories publish on this page at release.

Chapter 1 · Paul Wagner

In a 5–16 season, he carried a no-hitter to two outs in the ninth. One night, everything worked.

Chapter 2 · Scott Ruffcorn

64–25 in the minors, the #23 prospect in baseball — and 0–8 in the majors. He coaches school baseball in Texas now.

Chapter 3 · Mark Johnson

A first-round pick who nearly hit his way out of baseball, rebuilt himself on plate discipline, and made his first two major-league hits triples — the first off Pedro Martínez.

Chapter 4 · Phil Plantier

An 11th-round pick who hit with Ted Williams as a teenager, flashed twice (1991, then 34 home runs in 1993), and coached in the game for decades after injuries ended his playing days at 28.

Chapter 5 · Mark Dewey

In 1996 he refused, on religious grounds, to join an AIDS-awareness ceremony — the documented stand of his career; afterward he pastored a church and raised 12 children.
