WHEN THE DOOR OPENED

The one chance — a released pitcher who took a rotation spot by accident and set a record that still stands, the #14 prospect in all of baseball, an expansion pick who became a stolen-base king, a walk-on who nearly out-hit Team USA, and an 18-day career that became eleven years.

The five stories

Previews below. The full stories publish on this page at release.

Chapter 1 · Marvin Freeman

Released by Atlanta, he made Colorado's rotation only because another pitcher broke his hand — then went 10–2 with a 2.80 ERA that still stands as a Rockies record.

Chapter 2 · Ray McDavid

Baseball America's #14 prospect in baseball, his hometown Padres' #1. His whole major-league career was 20 games.

Chapter 3 · Chuck Carr

The expansion Marlins gave him his one real chance: he led the league in stolen bases in 1993, and his final major-league at-bat was a postseason home run off John Smoltz.

Chapter 4 · Jorge Fábregas

A last-minute walk-on to Team USA in 1990 who nearly led the team in hitting, then worked nine years as a backup catcher.

Chapter 5 · Jimmy Hurst

His major-league career lasted 18 days. He played eleven more years, and at 30 won a Triple Crown — the only one in his league's history.
